Product Description

Built on the site of an ancient Iron Age settlement, stands a striking piece of Gothic architecture, which matches it's haunted reputation.

Margam Castle, is actually a large Tudor mansion, built for Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot and his family between 1830 and 1840, with it’s service buildings and courtyards. It is listed Grade I as a building of exceptional quality, with some spectacular features such as the staircase.

Whilst the recognised and accredited architect is Thomas Hopper (1776 – 1856), it is rather interesting to find that another distinguished architect was closely involved with the project and almost certainly influenced the finished house, with work on the interior and exterior, the stables, terraces and lodges.

The site was deliberately chosen for it's historic associations and picturesque position at the foot of a wooded historic hill, Mynydd-y-Castell, itself the site of Margam’s earliest habitation, with the ruins of the Cistercian Abbey and the eighteenth century Orangery visible to the West. The prospect of the house, rising above the Orangery and monastic remains to the west is unique in Wales.

Margam Castle is home to many ghosts, some include laughing children, a blacksmith, and one thought to be Robert Scott who used to be a gamekeeper at the house.

There is also said to be a curse surrounding Margam Castle, that if the gatehouse pillars were to fall, that the family who were involved would die out within five years.

The Mansell family ignored the curse and had the pillars removed and the curse proved to be true as the family line did die out within five years. The Talbot family who then brought the land had the pillars rebuilt and they can still be seen standing today.

Now Margam Castle is in the care of the Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, a truly magnificent building steeped in history and alive with high reports of paranormal activity that have brought many investigations to the property. Reports of cold spots and orbs in the Castle were frighteningly abundant, it seems the the Castle is flushed with psychic energy.
