Inveraray Jail & County Courthouse were built in 1820.
Over 6000 offenders were tried in the courthouse which was the County Courthouse of Argyll. The courthouse was also used by the Circuit Court, The Sheriffs Court and the Burgh Courts.
The two storied prison named the "Old Prison" was the principal jail of Argyll and was used to hold men, women children and the insane in just 8 damp and cold cells. The prisoners that were held here had to spend 23 hours a day in their cells.
A second prison was completed in 1848, which all male prisoners were moves to in 1849. The "New Prison" was a model prison of its day with 12 cells on three floors.
With thousands of prisoners locked up here during the 69 years the prison was open who knows what energies still reside here.
