Product Description

Harwich Redoubt Fort was built in 1808 to guard the port of Harwich from the threat of a Napoleonic Invasion. It is believed that French Prisoners of War were used to help construct this impressive circular fort which is 180ft in diameter.

There are eighteen casements below which were able to hold 300 troops in siege conditions.

When built the Fort had clear views in all directions thanks to it's hill top position. Prior to the construction of the fort the aptly named Hill House stood on top of the hill, this was demolished to make way for the fort. There was also a very large Elm Tree named Paines Tree, this was used as a mariners landmark. It is believed the tree was named after the owner of hill house.

This 202 year old fort has seen many changes and modernisations as perceived threats and technology changed.

The fort was used during World War II as a prison for British Troops awaiting trial. Grafitti left by some of theses soldiers can still be viewed in some of the rooms of the fort.

With the forts long and varied history of military service who knows what energies still reside here.
